San Franciscans, trailblaizers of new ways to take away the rights of individuals, are preparing to enact a new law which mandates nutritional standards for kids meals that include a free toy. From the story:
Under the proposal, the food and beverage would have to contain fewer than 600 calories, and less than 35 percent of total calories would come from fat.
The meal would also have to contain 0.5 cups of fruit and 0.75 cups of vegetables and offer less than 640 mg of sodium and less than 0.5 mg of trans fat. Breakfast would have the option of offering 0.5 cups of fruit or vegetables.
Aside from the obvious that what a child ingests is the responsibility of the parent; aside from the fact that a private company has the freedom to sell any product it chooses to and consumers are free to not purchase those products, what moral right does the government – local, state, or national – have to legislate the contents of a Happy Meal?
Oh that’s right: the altruist morality of sacrificing for the “greater good” – whatever that may be de jure. See, a city government would never take away the freedoms of individuals if it believed humans were sovereign creatures, responsible for themselves, and capable of making decisions according to their own wants and needs. Instead, we have the City of San Francisco Board of Supervisors who see you, Mr. and Mrs. America, that you’re too stupid, uninformed, and lazy that you require the efforts of others to help you raise your children. They see businesses such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Subway as sacrificial animals at the alter of childhood obesity.
Not only is this a flagrant violation of the natural right to each individuals’ pursuit of happiness, but it is just another page in the book of altruism’s crusade against the rights of man. Thomas Jefferson takes another roll in his grave.
